| Personal & Health Services Grade 10, Health and Personal Services Technology (Open) TPJ 2O1 This course emphasizes technological applications in the areas of health care and personal services. Students will learn to describe and evaluate professional practices and principles; to select and use technical resources to solve problems; and to use materials, tools, and equipment safely. They will also acquire transferable skills for changing work environments, personal management skills, and knowledge of entry requirements for careers in this area. Prerequisite: none 1 Credit Grade 10, Health and Personal Services Technology Hairstylist (Open) TPJ 2O2 Focusing on hairstyling this (2 Credit) course emphasizes technological applications in the areas of health care and personal services. Students will learn to describe and evaluate professional practices and principles; to select and use technical resources to solve problems; and to use materials, tools, and equipment safely. They will also acquire transferable skills for changing work environments, personal management skills, and knowledge of entry requirements for careers in this area. The main focus of this 2-credit course is the hairstylist trade and is an excellent preparation for students considering the OYAP program. Prerequisite: none 2 credits Grade 11, Hairstyling and Aesthetics (Workplace Preparation) TPE 3E1 This course provides students with opportunities to learn techniques in hairstyling and aesthetics that meet industry standards, using appropriate materials and equipment. Students will identify trends in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry; describe scientific and physical processes used in beauty services; learn to respect environmental, health, and safety laws; and explore career opportunities. The course may focus on either hairstyling or aesthetics, or may include a combination of both areas. Prerequisite: TPE3E1 or TPE3E2 1 credit Grade 12, Hairstyling and Aesthetics (Workplace Preparation) TPE 4E2 This (2credit) course builds on the Grade 11 course to provide a solid foundation for students wishing to pursue a career in cosmetology. Students will learn to describe and evaluate professional practices and principles; to select and use technical resources to solve problems; and to use materials, tools, and equipment safely. They will also acquire transferable skills for changing work environments, personal management skills, and knowledge of entry requirements for careers in this area. The main focus of this concentration course is to provide the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in preschool development and care. The majority of scheduled time students will be participating fully in the preschool program. Prerequisite: none 1 credit Grade 12, Child Development and Gerontology (College Preparation) TPO 4C1 This course helps students understand and analyse the stages of development and needs of children and seniors. Students will master the basic skills required to meet these needs; acquire an awareness of legislation governing child and geriatric care; evaluate social and recreational activities for children and the elderly; and assess available facilities. Students will also examine career paths in child or geriatric care, the impact of technological developments on products and services, and health and safety laws.
