Welcome to White Oaks Secondary School’s World Wide Website
We have endeavoured to place information on this site that will assist you in gaining knowledge about White Oaks (WOSS) and the varied program we offer to meet the educational needs of all students.
The school was instituted in 1965 as a fully composite high school to serve the educational requirements for those families residing north of the Q.E.W. In 1998 General Wolfe Secondary School became part of White Oaks and it was renamed the White Oaks Centre of Science and Technology. The school now consists of two campuses, the main campus at 1330 Montclair Drive and the Centre at 1055 McCraney Street East. Depending on their program students utilize the facilities on both campuses.
Enrollment in all programs is approximately 1850 full time students. A majority of students are registered in the University and College programs preparing to attend post-secondary institutions. Others are registered in Specialist High Skills Major programs, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs in a variety of fields or in programs preparing them for employment upon graduation.
Though our first priority for all students is academic achievement, we do offer a full range of co-curricular opportunities. We encourage all students to participate in at least one activity during the school year. This may be in sports with a wide range of school teams, in the arts or the varied clubs such as School Reach, Debate, Chess Club, Yearbook, Newspaper. Research has demonstrated that students who make a connection to the school, tend to have improved achievement and success in the programs.
Important dates and information concerning upcoming events are posted to the site monthly to keep our White Oaks community informed and up-to-date. Please take time to attend school functions and support your son/daughter during their high school years. I especially encourage you to attend parent/teacher interview evenings to discuss your child’s academic progress. With a strong link between home and school, we can work together to ensure success for your child at WOSS.
Unique characteristics that set WOSS apart from other high schools in the Halton District School Board are our de-semestered grade nine English and Math program, and the IB program. As of September 2009, WOSS will be offering 6 programs as Specialist High Skills Majors. These include Hospitality, Manufacturing, Music, Physical Education, Emergency Services (Military) and Landscaping. White Oaks also offers a de-semestered music program and a new Computers in Music audio recording and composition course for students with interests in the recording industry. Contact Mr. Carmen Gassi for more details at gassic@hdsb.ca.
The grade nine de-semestered program is based on evidence that skills in those two areas can best be acquired and reinforced over an academic year, rather than in one semester. During the past two years 99.5% of the grade nine students were successful in earning their grade 9 Math and English credits.
WOSS is now registered as an International Baccalaureate school for the IB Diploma Program, offering programs in Math, Science and the Arts. The IB program is designed to cater to students seeking an enhanced and challenging academic program for grades 11 and 12. In order to prepare students for the IB program in grades 11 and 12 we are running an Accelerated Learning Program in grades 9 and 10 (ALP). For admission criteria for the ALP and IB program please contact either Mrs. K. Pfeiffer, Vice Principal pfeifferk@hdsb.ca or Mrs. Reither at reitherg@hdsb.ca.
