The Role of School Councils in Ontario

School councils have been created to enhance students’ learning through the cooperative efforts of parents/guardians, students, staff members, and others in the community. School councils are an advisory body of volunteers who work together to provide ideas and opinions to help the principal and sometimes the school district, make schools a better place for learning. School Councils are involved with issues affecting the education programs, extracurricular activities, and the operation of individual schools. (A School Council is a provincially regulated advisory body functioning under Ministry of Education Regulation 612/00 and board policy.)

School Councils Members

School council membership reflects both the school and the community and includes the following voting members:

- parents/guardians (including the chair, who must be a parent)
- the principal (non-voting)
- a teacher
- a non-teaching school staff member
- a student representative (on secondary school councils only)
- at least one member from the community at large (appointed by council)

Parents and guardians must make up the majority of council members. The positions within School Council (i.e., executive officers: chair, treasurer, and secretary) are elected positions.
